THE ANNUAL POINT-IN-TIME COUNT OF THOSE WHO ARE EXPERIENCING HOMELESSNESS ACROSS THE STATE OF VERMONT
- Location: Throughout the State of Vermont
- Date: January 22nd and January 23rd, 2020
The goal of the Point-in-Time (PIT) count is the have an annual “snapshot” of all the individuals and households in Vermont who are literally homeless (persons who are staying in shelters or places such as the streets, cars, and places not meant for human habitation) on one night in the community on a single night during January.
Each count throughout the state is planned, coordinated, and carried out locally with the support of the Vermont Coalition to End Homelessness. This count is required by Housing and Urban Development (HUD) for all communities nationwide that receive federal dollars to serve homeless individuals and households in order to comply with federal regulations and requirements. It also helps to identify areas of need, measure and monitor trends in homelessness, and support the communities’ needs when applying for funding.
Although many people experiencing homelessness will be connected to homeless providers and services for this count, some are not. Those who are not, it is important for community members who have a relationship with this person to help make the PIT count show a true story of homelessness in Vermont by informing them of the count and letting them know how to be counted on that night.
The best way for community members to have someone be counted during the PIT count on January 22-23, 2020 is to encourage them to call Vermont 211, a program of the United Ways of Vermont, and ask to be counted. (Simply dial 2-1-1)
Vermont 211 can also help those experiencing homelessness to find out about resources in their area that they can utilize.
