In honor of 50 years of community action in Vermont, the Office of Economic Opportunity is hosting a series of one-hour discussions on poverty every month in 2014. The fifth of these discussions will feature John Sayles, CEO, Vermont Foodbank, and will take place on Thursday, May 29 from Noon to 1pm.

John will talk about the charitable food network’s role in the constellation of anti-poverty programs, including:
- How it fits into the strategy of helping neighbors make ends meet;
- How their role has been changing; and
- How they can become more effective by working collectively.

More about the Speaker:
John Sayles has been CEO at the Vermont Foodbank since March of 2009. Before that he served 10 years in leadership positions at the VT Agency of Natural Resources and the Department of Public Service. He is a member of the Feeding America Policy Engagement and Advocacy Committee which develops national policy direction for more than 200 food banks nationwide. He was presented the 2012 Dick Goebel Public Service Award by Feeding America for contributions in public policy development. John is also a member of the Vermont Governor’s Pathways from Poverty Council.
John moved to Vermont in 1999, and lives in Montpelier with his wife and son. Prior to coming to Vermont, he practiced law in Maryland, both in private and government practice. He is a graduate of the University of Baltimore School of Law and Frostburg State University.
