In honor of 50 years of community action in Vermont, the Office of Economic Opportunity is hosting a series of one-hour discussions on poverty every month in 2014.
The fourth of these discussions is entitled Feet on the Street Housing Retention.
One way of getting to know the folks we all claim we know who live within some definition of poverty. Potential keys to being truly valued and recognized may be hidden in their stories.
Guest Speaker Dr. Michael Ohler, educator & social worker living in Winooski, will focus on the importance of keeping people in their homes and of gaining a deeper understanding of their stories and what they bring to life’s table.

More about the speaker:
Mike has spent many years as a community-based practitioner helping to establish and coordinate the Offender Reentry Housing Program at the Burlington Housing Authority. In his current role as a Housing Retention Specialist, he helps people stay in their homes. Mike is fascinated with the well-being of people especially those who have been disempowered and left without a voice. His doctoral research centered on housing strategies and the redeeming concept of truly getting to know the people he works for. Mike teaches college classes in writing, human services, sociology, and community building.
