From Jessica Radbord at Vermont Legal Aid:

You have likely heard that the Administration is proposing changes to the “public charge” rule for immigrants applying for certain changes in status in the U.S., including adding HUD-subsidized housing to the benefits taken into consideration.  Please see the attached information sheet from VLA, VLS, NCLEJ, and AALV for more information and to find out how you can submit a public comment by December 10 to express your opposition to this proposed rule.  Also attached is a brief news segment on the public charge rule from a press conference hosted by HungerFreeVT last week, including UVMC, HungerFreeVT, VAHC (represented by Cathedral Square), our congressional delegation, and a poignant story from a Vermonter who would be affected by the rule were it to become final.

Here’s the NECN report: https://www.necn.com/news/new-england/Vermont-Advocates-Blast-White-House-Immigration-Proposal-500166901.html.

Again, the rule isn’t final, and as you’ll see in this: Public Charge Outreach 11-7-18 document, it will not apply to refugees and it will not be retroactive.  If you have a client who is considering terminating their participation in a subsidized housing program (or other benefits, including 3SquaresVT) because of this, please refer them to VLA, VLS, AALV, or VRRP.

Comments on the document listed above from Vermont Network Against Domestic and Sexual Violence.
